Great question. I got my oil changed today and the guy behind the counter asked, "What exactly is a Health Coach? Before I could answer, he started guessing....
A Health Coach is a listener, someone who assesses everything in the person, mannerisms, conversation styles. I look for the little clues during conversation with a client that will help me discover their pain. I want them to discover patterns they never knew existed.
My role as a Health Coach includes: listening, taking notes and trying to determine the root cause of the issue at hand. We cover relationships to food, connection to self, friendships, fitness levels, career, healthy habits, unhealthy habits, goals, confidence levels, posture, aches and pains, etc. Some describe this position as a counselor, career coach and lifestyle therapist wrapped up into one unique package.
Then he told me about his normal blood pressure.
He said he was 300 pounds overweight, but healthy as an ox.
He looked at me for any kind of reaction,
but I was assessing the situation and wasn't ready to react.
He went on, "My parents are in their 70's, but look like they are 50! I'm Norwegian, maybe we just age well. Guess how old I am?? Come on.
What do you think!?"
I despise this question. You either offend someone or make their day.
"31?"
He laughed and then told me he loved me. He did a little dance, told the customers in the waiting room that his day was made!
"Girl, I'm 41!"
Then the phone rang, I paid my bill and walked out the door.

I describe it as someone
who genuinely wants people to feel good.
Bottom line.
That is why I am a Health Coach.
